In 1954, the Formula 1 single-seaters returned to Pau. That year, three official Maseratis were added, coming to counter their Ferrari rivals. Two private Ferraris are entered as well as four Gordinis driven by a French trio composed of Jean Behra, Elie Bayol and Eugène Martin associated with the Belgian André Pilette. While two of the factory Ferraris had to retire, the third, driven by Maurice Trintignant, was in the lead at halfway. His pursuer Jean Behra, on Gordini, caught up, smashed the lap record several times, won a remarkable duel with his compatriot in the final laps then won the Grand Prix with only a few meters ahead of the Ferrari. This is the first victory for a French manufacturer since 1938.
