Eugène Delacroix : (1798-1863) was a french painter, considered as one of the precursors of the Romantic movement, and its major french figure. Already in his early stages, Delacroix got away from his academical training, which he accomplished at the Beaux-Arts. He was opposed to classicism, drawing inspiration from painters such as Rubens or Venetian painters of the Renaissance. He preferred depicting human passions in a realistic style, through expressive brushstrokes, using optical effects linked to light and colours as a main purpose. It is in that way that he profoundly shaped the work of the Impressionists. After his first exhibition at the Salon, Eugène Delacroix was regularly commissioned for paintings by public institutions. He received his first official award thanks to his worlwide renowned painting "La Liberté guidant le peuple" (Liberty leading the people) (1831). His most renowned works are "La Liberté guidant le peuple" (Liberty leading the people), "la Mort de Sardanapale" (The Death of Sardanapalus) ou encore "Les Massacres de Scio" (The Massacre at Chios). His works are present in all the most prestigious museums around the world.
