Henri IV - Signed letter of 1593

HENRI IV (1553 - 1610), king of France

Handwritten letter signed "Henry" for the attention of Monsieur de Maizière, countersigned by his secretary of state Nicolas de Neufville, Lord of Villeroi. Fontainebleau, May 8, 1593; 1 folio page with address on the back. Watermarked paper adorned with a coat of arms with the letter "N" (Navarre). Recipient's address on the back with residue of the red wax seal.

The king orders Monsieur de Maizières, camp master, to assign to his service a good number of people on horseback and on foot, from the country of Guienne (Bordeaux region along the ocean to the south to Navarre), finishing his missive with the ritual formula: "praying to God that he has you, Monsieur de Mezieres, in his powerful and worthy guard".

The year 1593 marks the conversion of King Henry IV to the Catholic religion. Indeed, despite his coronation of August 2, 1589, Henri IV could not win against the league which refused a Protestant king. He tries twice to enter Paris but in vain. It was on the initiative of his mistress and favorite, Gabrielle d'Estrées, that he decided to convert to Catholicism on July 25, 1593, in the Saint-Denis basilica. The leaguers refuse to recognize his baptism but the entire population, tired of civil wars, rallies behind its new king.
