"Beautiful comfortable armchairs. Pivoting, the egg-shaped Lounge armchairs await the flow of travellers. They have been drawn by Phillippe Starck and created by Cassina. The small adjustable tablet is well thought out. After the helicoidal stair of the mezzanine, a vast steel table with a marble tray is juxtaposed with the video-bar." "Waiting for Eurostarck", Eurostar placed its bet on the designer Philippe Starck, promoted as artistic director to lift the image of the group. After London, Starck opned The Lounge in Paris the 27th of June 2002, the private lounge of the buisness class of the Gare du Nord. The Eurostar group has inaugurated "The Longue", the new "buisness" lounge of the Gare du Nord. Signed Philippe Starck, artistic director of the entire project, this refurbishment marks the beginning of a renovation programme of 56 million euros which goes from the terminal rails to the London, Paris and Brussels terminals. The seating capacity has been tripled and "The lounge" can now welcome 154 travellers (premium class only) which will benefit from a relaxing space aimed to be "original, comfortable and warm" with "functional" and "eccentric" furniture elements. Indeed, with functional elements such as the long table of the bar in marble and the cocoon-like armchairs made by Cassina comes a series of elements of decoration in a pure style full of humour, like the news racks showing pups with cheeky looks or an X-ray like cloakroom presenting an amusing series of luggage skeletons. "From this lounge to the other at the arrival, I want all the time to be for the traveller," explains Philippe Starck, insisting on the qualitative aspect of his project. "With this programme, we have upgraded all the Eurostar classes. Now, the second class benefits from comfort and service true to a first class," he pursues. David Azema, the president of the Eurostar group, has also commented the designation of Philippe Starck as artistic director of the project: "The work of Phillippe Starck rests upon a unique and recognisable style, quality creations both aesthetic and functional, and, moreover, a sensitivity perfectly in phase with the market's internationa dimension."
This renovation programme also relates to the interior furbishment planned for early 2004. According to David Azema, president of Eurostar, he will propose "a style and a comfort revisited for work, leisure and dreaming." By qualifying this new space as "unique in the world", Eurostar reaffirms his position as leader on the market in relation to aerial competition. A dominant position which should reinforce itself with the reduction of time of the crossing. In 2007, it will take no longer than 2h15 to link Paris to London by train.
