The reliquary boxes were topped by a statue or a head which acted as a guardian of the "Byeri" boxes. These were kept in a dark corner of the hut, and were meant to divert evil influences towards someone else.

Fang : Central Africa people mainly livin in Cameroon, equatorial Guinea and Gabon. The Fang are especially known for their guardian figures which they attached to wooden boxes containing bones of the ancestors. Fang ancestors figures are visible in the Quai Branly museum in Paris.
