Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire), Tabwa people, Mid-20th century, Old anthropomorphic statuette with shiny patina

DRC (formerly Zaire) Tabwa people Mid-20th century Statuette representing a standing female figure, the feet symbolically represented in a trapezoidal volume. The tubular body has a small chest as well as a parallel row of scarifications, a swollen abdomen, adorned with a slightly protruding navel. The arms are bent, detached from the body, the hands resting on the hips. The face is characterized by two large round eyes surmounted by semi-circular eyebrow arches, a flat nose overhanging an open mouth. The forehead and temples barred by a deep scarification, the cheeks incised with a cross-shaped scarification. The large pierced ears, the hair encircled by a headband and brought back in small braids at the back of the skull.
