Georges Brassens (1921 - 1981),
Autograph manuscript of the song "Le revenant".
No place of issue; 1 1/4 pages in quarto on graph paper with binder holes in the margin without affecting the text.
Manuscript found of one of the last songs that Brassens did not have time to record before his death, which occurred on October 29, 1981. The song "Le revenant" was set to music and performed by Jean Bertola in 1982, then by Maxime le Forestier.
The manuscript was copied with some erasures and marginal corrections. Brassens, a perfectionist as always, spent considerable time revising his lyrics until he achieved the desired version. It is clear, once again, that the poet did not obtain the final version in this draft; some verses were omitted from the final song, and other lines were reworked.
"Comfortable, peaceful, inhabited"
By very kind people
Such was the beautiful little cemetery where
He had his hole
As he did not resign himself
To have passed from life to death
He fancifully decided to return to the
Laughing is a real jerk's idea
The old dead, the old people lie here.
The brave whitewashed tombs
So that he would reverse his crazy decision
They spoke in vain
Rebuilding his skeleton
Giving him a quick wash
He took his coat, his cane, and his hat.
And the key to the resting field
Back home after returning
His dog didn't recognize him
And he bites into one of the most important bones
In two bites
To soothe her emotion
He thought of making a libation
Into the alcove having entered
He saw that his widow was grieving
Had established his widowhood completed
Someone in their bed
He understood at first glance
That she was no longer in mourning
Then, wretched, wavering in his faith
He died a second time
The gossip at the crack of dawn
He picked up the bones that were lying around.
And sold them for a pittance.
To the medical students
And ever since, this corpse
To the tune of an old, chanting melody
To kill time, to distract oneself from worries
Sing, oh how bored we are here
By crowding people together
To lead to the fields
People's turnips and people
I ended up becoming friends with the gravediggers
I'm proud of it, by the way.
Through them I learned of the epic story of this illustrious corpse
Who in an amphitheater or an old saw tune
Sung (…)
Dead if you return to Earth
To see that the presbytery
It has lost its charm and that's all.
And the garden in all its splendor.
Georges BRASSENS (1921 - 1981),
Manuscrit autographe de la chanson « Le revenant ».
