This finely sculpted African mask is one of the stylistic variation of the white itengi masks of Gabon. In tribal art, this Gabonese mask was associated with different secret societies such as Bwiti, Bwete, and Mwiri. The Mwiri organised itself in various stages of initiation, to which every Punu man belonged, and their emblem was the caiman.
