Max ERNST
Mr Knife and Miss Fork, 1931
Photogramme
23 x 30 cm
The meeting of Max Ernst with the Italian artist Giorgio De Chirico, the experience gained during his time at university in psychiatric hospitals and his knowledge of Freudian psychoanalysis
contributed to the creation of his artistic style expressed through the collage during his Dadaist.
He distanced himself from the movement gradually moving away from the mere aesthetic pleasure to get closer to Surrealism, which allowed a personal interpretation.
The most important technique invented by Ernst is the "frottage": it is considered as one of the most successful experiment of the twentieth century.
This work is from a frottage, which was printed in the artist's book "Mr Knife and Miss Fork" in 255 copies.
