Andrea MANTEGNA
Madonna col Bambino,
Burin and dry point engraving
21 x 22 cm
The engraving, dated around 1480-1485, represents Madonna seated, who tenderly holds in her arms the child: an intimate and human scene, far from courtly depictions of the Holy Family. The artist,
through the burin and dry point engraving, gets deep chiaroscuro effects that highlight the drawn figures.
Mantegna was among the first artists to understand the importance and the charm of engraving techniques.
