Très belle lettre de cet astronome américain qui voyagea beaucoup en Europe, il remercie son correspondant pour la lutte que les américains mènent en faveur de la liberté :
« the struggles and sufferings in defending her existence…and removing in the only possible way THE INIQUITY OF SLAVERY which impeded our moral and intellectual growth…" Il veut partager ce combat : "my share for building up the edifice of american science…"
Il parle ensuite longuement de ses collègues Eucke, Bache, Rutherford : "working with him in New York, on his PHOTOGRAPHIE METHODS…the impressions of stars to the 81/2 magnitude with white light…"
Il va également faire une important publication : "An edition of the standard places of fixed stars…the results of fours years observations at Washington…"
GOULD créa l'Astronomical Journal découvrit la Gould Belt et fonda l'Argentine National Observatory et l'Argentine national Weather Service
