Marc CHAGALL - Moses and Aaron with the Pharaoh, Lithograph

Marc CHAGALL
Moses and Aaron with the Pharaoh
Lithograph
26 x 35 cm (10.2 x 13.8 inches)

In 1966 Chagall achieves 24 colored lithographs on the theme of the Exodus from Egypt, marked by the guidance of the three children of Amram, Moses, Aaron and Miriam. In this work are represented Moses and Aaron, who, according to the Scriptures, came to Pharaoh and told him: "This is what the LORD God of Israel says: 'Let my people go so they may make a pilgrimage for me in the desert.'"
Pharaoh said, "Who is the LORD, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the LORD and I will not let Israel go."
They told him: "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the LORD our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword."
But the king of Egypt said, "Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!"
Then Pharaoh said, "Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working."
