Giancarlo Prandelli, Leda and the Swan (Leonardo da Vinci), Pencil on Cardboard, 18x32,5cm

This work is Giancarlo Prandelli’s rendition of the popular subject of Leda and the Swan. The particular theme of greek mythology that most artists painted during the Renaissance, portrays a mortal woman, Leda, and Zeus in the form of a swan. Over the years, this subject matter has been depicted in various styles, however the underlying theme of sexuality and a woman’s fertility has always played a key role. Prandelli’s work, done in black and white highlights the shadows and bright areas of the sketch. The soft lines with elegant obstructions and floral details adds to this refined representation. Additionally, the depiction of the female body as extremely curvy gives Leda sensual attributes. This drawing was made by Leonardo da Vinci between 1505 and 1510 in Milan. Even though the original has been lost, Prandelli’s work can be considered an impressive recreation of the great icon’s painting. The work is signed on the lower right corner.
