Works of art by Sophie Petitpas (1960-), a French-American artist born in 1960. She lives and works in Miami, USA. The events of September 11 marked a turning point in her artistic approach. The spirit of solidarity and agitation around the American flag following the tragic events moved her deeply. She started collecting old flags, and destroyed flags, so as to use them as a base of her work. In her artistic approach, she gets inspiration from American pop culture its icons, as she reworks the American flag to give it a new life. Using different techniques she constructs and deconstructs the textile, always keeping the symbolic meaning and its memorial ambition. In making these reborn flags it is also the whole American culture that is highlighted, America’s “melting pot” of the “new frontier”.
