The Saint-Pierre chapel in Villefranche-sur-Mer is originally a fisherman's chapel dating from the mid-16th century, initially used as a shed for fishermen's nets and equipment, it evolves into a fishing court to settle disputes . Albert Lorent, Cocteau's friend, persuaded him to renovate it. The latter embarked on this vast project, helped by local artists, in 1957. He decorated the facade and the interior of the chapel. The work is organized around five scenes: two scenes evoke Mediterranean life and three others the life of Saint-Pierre. After a year of work, despite many financial concerns, and thanks to the generosity of patrons, the chapel was inaugurated on June 30, 1957. Charlie Chaplin was invited to visit it with Cocteau on July 18 of the same year.
