Vincent van Gogh : Born in Groot Zundert, Brabant, in 1853, Vincent van Gogh was a dutch artist. Misunderstood genius of his time, he is now considered as one of the greatest painter of the 19th century. His researchs on shape and color influenced considerably the next avant-garde movements. Approaching 1880, he dedicated himself to painting. He left the Netherlands for Belgium, then settled in France. His painting reflected his researchs and his artistic knowledge (japanese prints, english engravings, influences of his contemporaries and friends (Anthon van Rappard, Émile Bernard and Paul Gauguin)...). The artist led a tumultuous life reflecting his mental instability. He committed suicide at the age of 37 in Auvers-sur-Oise in 1890. Alhough his works remained little-known in the 1890's, their exhibition at The Museum of Modern Art in New York in the 1930's attracted 120 000 people and are now some of the world's most sought-after.
