Satyr and Nymph

Made around 1818 by Jean Louis Théodore Géricault (1791 - 1824)

The love of the satyr for a nymph is a mythological theme often treated with lightness. But here the satyr is an athletic male and the woman, exhausted by the grip, is pressed against the ground in a
position that evokes a rape. The two bodies, laid bare and without faces, are opposed around a void that takes on a constructive value, announcing the developments of contemporary sculpture.
