China - Earthenware court lady, with TL test, Tang dynasty, China

China

dynastie TANG (618-907)

Tall standing court lady dressed in court clothes.
Earthenware "mingqi"

Grey pottery coated with white slip and well-preserved black and orange cold-painted pigments.

The lady measures 52,5cm high and is in a wonderful condition.

This standing, slim court lady shows a serene facial expression. Her hair is tied in two large loops. Her upper garment has elaborated winged shoulders and a raised collar leading to a
round-shaped front, which puts her long neck in value.
Her shoes have elaborate, up-turned lotus-form toes. Her elongated sleeves are representative of the court fashion at that time.

This high court woman is performing what appears to be a sedate dance; she is holding a round implement in both hands with strings or ribbons that functioned somewhat like castanets.

Ladies with gowns and headdresses as elaborate as these are quite rare among Tang figures. Their ornate style of dress and hairdo is in the latest fashion and place these ladies in the highest
echelons of Tang society.

This lady comes with a TL certificate from Ralf Kotalla, consistent with the Tang period, in 3 different points.
The TL made by Ralf Kotalla reveals that it is approximately 1310 years old (dating back to the early Tang Dynasty, 7th Century), which is a very distinctive style as compared to the later
fashion of Tang plump court ladies called "fat ladies".
