Ary Scheffer (1795-1858) is a french painter of dutch origin. He imposed himself as one of the key figures of the french Romantic movement. His compositions denote a mystic and oniric inspiration. In 1811, Ary came to Paris in the studio of Pierre-Narcisse Guérin. The moment when Scheffer left Guérin coincided with the beginning of the romantic movement. He turned to Byron and Goethe, chosing in "Faust" a long series of subjects, which were at the time very popular. He was an excellent portraitist, as it can be seen in the portraits he made of Chopin or Liszt. As a protestant, he turned also to religious subjects. His tight bonds with the royal Family - he was the drawing professor of princess Marie d'Orléans (1813-1839), daughter of the King Louis-Philippe — explain the fall of his popularity after the instauration of the Second Republic in 1848. Scheffer was promoted commander of the Legion of Honour in 1848, and was naturalised french at the end of his life, in 1850. His daughter Cornélia Scheffer, childless, left at her death the quasi totality of her father's studio to the city of Dordrecht, where he was born. The city then built a museum bearing his name (today Dordrechts Museum). In 1995, for the bicentenary of his death, the Dordrecht Museum made a major retrospective of his work, which was naturally shown the next year at the Musée de la vie romantique.
