Mexico Huastec Culture / 800 - 1500 AD Small anthropomorphic potion vase, Ceramic with cream and coffee red slip Cream and coffee red slip ceramic 7 x 7 cm Wear and tear, minor damage Richelieu Art Sale, 2012 Small anthropomorphic vase used by shamans for the preparation of potions. It represents a seated character with a globular body presenting a small chest, atrophied limbs and presenting a face with coffee bean eyes, pierced ears. Body paintings formed of broken lines and diamonds adorn almost the entire piece. It is traditionally accepted that the Huastec culture developed in the states of Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, Veracruz and Tamaulipas, and was particularly concentrated along the Pánuco River and on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. The Huastecs are descendants of some Mayan groups from southern Mexico, their cultural peak occurring before the Aztecs established their empire in Mesoamerica.
