MEXICO, Veracruz, 550-950 AD - Small anthropomorphic statue in terracotta

MEXICO, Veracruz, 550-950 AD
Small anthropomorphic statue representing a young priest, standing, arms and hands raised towards the sky in a symbolic gesture, perhaps a sign of summoning of the rain. His face has a smiling expression under the influence of a hallucinogenic substance, and he is adorned with a headdress arranged with care and balance. It is decorated with the totemic figure of a leaping monkey, an animal associated to scribes as well as pelota players in Mesoamerica. He wears a large loincloth, decorated with motifs shaped like temple staircases and an ornate necklace with an amulet around his neck.
Beige terracotta with beautiful traces of white and turquoise, broken and repaired, slight restoration that does not exceed 5% of the work's global mass.
Dimensions: 36 x 24 x 10 cm/14.1 x 9.4 x 3.9 inches

(A thermoluminescence test situates this work in the given period and shall be given to the acquirer.)
