Mali - Bambara Lock

Lock with carved motif presenting a human head executed in a style typical of the Bambara culture and framed by two horns.

Very nice patina due to wear.

Antiquity: first half of the 20th century

Collected by the seller near Bougouni.
Height: 47 cm
Material: wood with an anti-wear metal plate on the cross beam


According to tradition locks belong most often to women.

There are different circumstances of attribution:

They can be offered by their husbands after the birth of the first boy, other locks are given by the husbands when the young women settle in the village of the husband.

Bambara : Bambara people (or Bamana) are a West Africa people living mainly in Mali.
