Michael ROBERTS - New York elegance. cut paper - circa 1990
Canson cut out and pasted on foam board. Probably a cover project for The New Yorker magazine - 1990s.
In the 90s the artist produced many covers and illustrated articles for The New Yorker magazine - For this he used a particular graphic style: the borders of the elements of the composition had to be very clearly cut. It is difficult to achieve this effect in painting or drawing. He will therefore use canson paper which he cuts with a scalpel. This gives a particular sharpness to the contours. It was in Paris that he discovered this medium in the 1990s.- There are therefore slight reliefs in the work, each colored element having been cut out separately, from the smallest to the largest.
The work presented in this advertisement comes from the Parisian apartment of the artist, dispersed at auction recently - It is not signed - the auction sale label has been preserved on the back of the work.

Michael Roberts, British fashion journalist and illustrator born in 1947, studied graphic design and design at Wycombe College of Art.
Fashion editor/director, at The Sunday Times, Vanity Fair in New York, British Vogue, New Yorker magazines.
He is now a fashion photographer for various Vogue affiliates around the world, GQ America and England, Sunday Times.
He is also the author of illustration books (Fashion Victims...)
He is also a set photographer (film Victoria - with Emily Blunt -2009)
Mr. Roberts was awarded the title of Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2022.
In a Vogue interview, he says he finds the fashion industry tough and sad. Thus, he wrote Fashion Victims, a satirical book of anagrams giving voice to those who are victims.
