Mexico Veracruz culture, 450 - 750 AD Ritual whistle with a menacing warrior figure Brown ceramic 13.4 x 9.5 cm excluding base Minor accidents, restorations to the headdress Sale at the Antiques Fair, Paris, 1982, menacing warrior The character is depicted standing, legs apart, arms detached from the body and hands placed on the thighs in an attitude of defiance. He is adorned with a small loincloth and a large necklace materialized by the pastillage technique. The face of disproportionate dimensions has eyes marked with an incision, an eagle-beak nose and a mouth with a pronounced rictus in sign of defiance. The ears are decorated with large circular tambas (earrings), the top of the skull adorned with a double headband and adorned with a scholarly headdress composed of two large lenticular motifs in its center as well as two quadrangular growths at its ends. Part of the face is decorated with black warlike paint, here bitumen (chapopote), clearly indicating the character's warlike intentions, in this case a warrior or a pelota player.
