Mathurin Méheut, painter of the Great War.
In 1914, when war broke out, Mathurin Méheut joined the front as a soldier in the 136th Infantry Regiment. He took part in the fighting near Arras, on the Western Front, where the war of movement quickly gave way to trench warfare, synonymous with length and attrition. He would find himself plunged into the horrors of the front for five long years.
He would produce many drawings, capturing the reality of the conflict in real life. Through his works, Méheut offers a unique window on the First World War, combining the precision of a soldier's testimony with the sensitivity of an artist.
