Paintings by Guillaume Fouace (1837-1895), a french painter who was born on May 22nd in 1837 in Réville (North of France) and died on January 7th 1895 in Paris. He was drawing since he was a child, and his talent was naturally noticed by the chief curator of Cherbourg. Thanks to him, he got two scholarships in order to study painting in Paris, just as his illustrious predecessor from Cotentin, Jean-François Millet. He was a student of Adolphe Yvon. He settled as a portraitist painter, and then participated in the franco-prussian war. In 1870, three years after his arrival in the capital, he exhibited at the Salon. In 1873, he exhibited his first sill lives.
In 1878, he decorated the vaults of the Montfarville church with 19 canvases representing biblical scenes such as the Annunciation, the Flight into Egypt, the three kings journey. In the choir, he reproduced the Last Supper of Leonardo da Vinci. He died of a lung illness in 1895, just before receiving his medal of Knight of the Legion of Honnour the government had just awarded to him.
Over his painter's career, he made more than 700 realistic paintings, mainly portraits and still lives, and some landscapes. The Musée d'Orsay has some of his paintings. The Musée Thomas-Henry of Cherbourg-Octeville dedicated one room to him, where is exhibited around 40 of his works.
