Liberating the forms of their representative aspect, Hartung privileges the physical and intuitive act of drawing and painting forces both material and immaterial in presence.

This free expression process of abstract figures by rapid and spontaneous gestures emancipated from all academism, will be noticed by the young art critic Charles Estienne who employs for the first time the term of "painting of action". "Term which then went until the US to become 'action painting', then 'gestural painting' which would be reclaimed by the American painters Pollock, Franz Kline, Sam Francis and in France, Georges Mathieu and many others.
