Charles Maurice de TALLEYRAND - Signed autograph letter

Charles-Maurice de TALLEYRAND, Prince of Bénévent (1754 - 1838), French politician and diplomat.

Autograph letter signed to citizen Marie-Joseph Chénier representative of the people in Paris. 23 Nivose (December 21 - January 19); 1 page in-8°. Address on last page (small angular lack in
fourth page)

Beautiful letter from Talleyrand who is full of praise on reading the scandalous tragedy on religious fanaticism "Charles IX": "I cannot thank you enough, my dear Chenier, for everything
the pleasure your Charles 9 gave me. It's one of those sensations lost since Voltaire. The details sparkle with beauty, and the whole is worthy of the greatest masters. Your glory is
assured. You know my dear friend how dear she is to me and will always be. I must write to you since I no longer see you…”

Marie-Joseph Chénier (1764 - 1811) was born in Constantinople, he is the younger brother of the poet André Chénier. He began a military career in the dragoons of Montmorency. But he stops
the army to orient themselves in literature. The beginnings were difficult, he was booed at the performance of Edgar, or the supposed Page, at the Comédie-Française in 1785. His tragedy Charles IX, ou la
Saint-Barthélemy, renamed a few years later Charles IX, or the school of kings, was censored when it left on October 14, 1789, because of its denunciation of the spirit of freedom prey to the
religious fanaticism. After two years of purgatory, the premiere took place after the storming of the Bastille on November 4, 1789, and was a resounding success, comparable to that of The Marriage of Figaro, in
accord with the revolutionary ideals of the moment. Camille Desmoulins affirmed that Charles IX had done more for the revolution than the days of October 1789 which lead to the definitive return and
constrained by King Louis XVI and his family in Paris.

"In times of revolution, one finds skill only in boldness, and greatness only in exaggeration."
