BRASSAÏ, signed autograph letter concerning an exhibition in the USA.
Signed autograph letter to his dear Babeth.
New York, 4th of June 1973.
2 pages in 4 on 2 sheets.
An inspiring letter from Brassaï about his American conquest: "We got to Paris so late from the south that finally I only had 3 weeks to prepare 2 exhibition in the United States (one in Corcoran -
Museum in Washington - the 1st of June) also I didn't have a second to loose. Luckily I had just about the time to do everything and the photographs arrived (through diplomatic luggage). We spent 5
very pleasant days in Washington, among its luxuriant nature. I especially liked George-town with its little gardens filled with magnolias, clematis, azaleas, rhododendrons. We were staying in a
hotel in front of the White House, and the exhibition was a real success, many people came from New-York, Chicago and even from San-Francisco for the inauguration, like Ansel Adams, the most
well-known photographer in America, from Carmel (near San-Francisco). There was a diner for 60 people in the museum, I sold all my photographs. (The exhibition will continue in other cities like
Chicago, etc.). I am writing to you in a lovely appartement in front of Central Park that a friend provided us with 4 spanish servants. Last night (sunday) there was a Puerto Rican celebration on Vth
avenue. It was as lively and colorful as the Rio Carnival. Around the 15th we will probably go to San Francisco (after an exhibition and the publication of the BRASSAÏ Portfolio) and also in Los
Angeles to see my old friend Henri Miller...".
