Nepal
XVIth - XVIIth century
Small gilded bronze representation of Uma Maheshvara (Shiva and Parvati)

Without base: 6.5 x 5.3 cm
Strong alteration of the faces due to the worship of devotees

Old representation in gilded bronze of the couple Shiva and Parvati in the form of Uma Maheshvara (Uma being one of the homnymes of Parvati and Maheshvara qualifying Shiva of Great Lord). They are both depicted in a relaxed position (lalitasana) on a semicircular base adorned with a row of lotus petals and leaning against a flaming mandorla. Shiva decked out with four arms is classically represented, taller than his consort. With his upper limbs he brandishes a sword and a small drum, he embraces his wife with his lower right hand, the left wielding an attribute. He is depicted resting on the back of a cobras and adorned with rich jewels: high tiara, dangling earrings, broad necklace and Brahmanic cord.
As for Parvati, she embraces her husband with her right arm, her left hand resting on his chest. It also features rich jewelry and is based on the Nandi teaureau.
