Concerning the ceremonies of the Gelede, practiced mainly in the western Yoruba kingdoms, the masks are built on the same principle: a face (mask-helmet type) and a scene which develops on the top part of the mask. These are used in the context of masquerades dedicated to the "Supreme Mother" Iya Nla, Olokun or Yemoja according to the regions. Their appearance, which entertains the public, teaches him both the virtues of social life and reminds women in Yoruba society of their obligations towards others.
