Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890) (after)
Portrait of Doctor Gachet
Engraving
Unsigned
On laid paper, 32 x 25 cm
INFORMATION: The "Portrait of Dr. Gachet" (also known as "The Man with the Pipe") is the only etching created by Van Gogh. He settled in Auvers-sur-Oise on May 20, 1890.
Van Gogh frequented Dr. Gachet, who introduced him to intaglio printing. On May 25th, he created this famous portrait in half an hour. 61 copies were printed at the time.
To make this exceptional engraving accessible, the Artfever gallery commissioned a new edition: the plate was engraved by J. Boiteux based on the copy held at the
National Library of France (and in a slightly larger size than the original to avoid any confusion) and the print made on old paper in the traditional way, printed at the
hand on a hand press, in an intaglio workshop.
