General Guan Yu
Deified after his death, Guan Yu became known as Guan Gong, whose statues can often be found in shops and police stations throughout Asia. He is regarded as the god of righteousness, justice and
integrity.
This legendary historical figure embodies the balance between wen (文) and wu (武), which may be translated as "the cultured" and "the martial".
Guan Yu is the perfect embodiment of this balance. He is, of course, the invincible warrior, the ultimate symbol of martial strength. However, the legend also emphasises his mastery of wen: his
strength is guided by wisdom and moral principles.
From a European perspective, Guan Yu offers a valuable insight into a civilisation in which intellect and the sword are not opposed, but complementary.
