The conventional term "idols with eyes" was given by Max Mallowan in 1937-1938 during excavations at Tell Brak in Syria, where he discovered hundreds of small anthropomorphic plates with disproportionate eyes, arranged in a richly decorated building. The archaeologist extended this name to other objects, this time called "idols with glasses or eyes" because they are surmounted by two circles disproportionate to their total dimensions; they are considered to be the prototypes of the first ones.
