Mali - Marka Mask

Mali
Marka Mask
Datation: 50 years approx.
Refer to the oxidation of the brass plates

Height: 52 cm

The Marka people, or Saracole, live in Mali according to Segou San Koutiala. They live in contact with the Bambara, adopting some rites and evolving towards others types of masquerades.

The morphology of the face is similar to that of the Bambara: a dominant forehead with a downward gaze, an elongated nose and small mouth. The artistic production is limited to masks, with no sculptural work but with a work of carbed veneer brass leaves. This originality leads to a very decorative result. The Marka like to add horns and tongues on the top and braids on the bottom.
