This African mask was the exclusive privilege of the nganga priest. His medium abilities, that the Kongo thought favoured by taking hallucinogenic substances, were revealed by the hollowed out eyes of the mask. This type of mask was called the Ngobudi, referencing something frightful and terrorising. The crusty surface appearance suggests the use red and white paints.
