Rare and beautiful letter by Victor Hugo in the first years of his exile on the island of Jersey. Marine Terrace is the home of Victor Hugo in Jersey, a refugee on this island from August 1852 to October 1855, which makes it possible to date this letter.

Here is the beginning of an exile that will last 20 years. "(...) Any provocation must be noted in our situation. Dignity and honor bear this price " It is with these words that the poet begins his letter: "(...) Dear friend," he continues,"I publish in as many newspapers as possible the statement that you will read. Help me in advertisingit . If it is a new exile, so be it. (...)" He also asks him "a favour, a real favour. Could you have your faithful and dignified Miss Constance hand in the great letter joint here at her address in Paris on January 1st? "(laminated ticket). Although afraid about being "very indiscreet (...)" The poet confesses that he would be very obliged. Victor Hugo inquires about the health of his correspondent: "You are strong against evil as against crime (...)" he remarks. He uses his pen "in many ways" and enjoys doing "things I call drawings. I send you one of these drawings as a greetings card for the first day of the year. Accept it and keep it as a pledge of my tender and fraternal friendship ... "
