Georges CLEMENCEAU - Signed autograph letter

Georges CLEMENCEAU (1841 - 1929), French journalist and statesman

Autograph letter signed to MP Henry Lémery. Paris, December 5, 1918; 2 pages in-8° on its letterhead of the president of the council and minister of war.

Rare letter from Clemenceau at the end of the war, regretting the resignation of his secretary of state for maritime transport and the merchant navy: "I regret that the new distribution of ministerial powers necessitated by the armistice has determined you to give your resignation. Believe me, I remember your attitude at the cruel moment you mention. I know with what zeal you have devoted yourself to your duties and I would like, at a time when you are resigning, to renew to you the testimony of my friendly gratitude..."

Henry Lémery (1874 - 1972) was born in Martinique. He finds himself an orphan following the eruption of Mount Pelee. He entered politics as a deputy in 1914. He voluntarily enlisted as a soldier when war was declared and stood out in Champagne, Verdun and the Somme. Clemenceau appointed him Under-Secretary of State for Maritime Transport and the Merchant Navy on November 16, 1917 within his second government. He is the first from overseas to be appointed to a French government. He resigned after the armistice, on December 5, 1918, when Clemenceau was considering appointing him Minister of Stocks.
