Mouse Oracle – BAULE - Ivory Coast

Mouse oracles were used by diviners. A mouse was placed in the upper part with some rice. When the mouse moved, the rice was displaced. Then the diviner made predictions by "reading" the position of the rice, moved by the mouse.

Very finely carved item, with a beautiful patina..
Masks are carved on the oracle, indicating that the item is most probably coming from the area of Sakassou, center of the Baule culture.

Height : 22 x 21.5 x 17.5 cm.
Height : 1.44 Kg.
Material : wood of good density, metal, natural fibers.
Second half of XXth Century

Baoule : The Baoulé (or Baule) are an Akan people and one of the largest groups in the Ivory Coast.
