Paul Cézanne : (1839-1906) is a french impressionist painter, considered as the precursor of cubism. He was born in Aix-en-Provence in 1839. His influence on the development of avant-gardes and modern art was crucial for art history. In 1862, Cezanne settled in Paris, and worked at The Charles Suisse Academy where he met Pissarro, Renoir, Monet, Sisley and Achille Emperaire. He moved to Auvers-sur-Oise ten years later. Around 1877, he distanced himself from the Impressionist group and returned to Provence from 1882, at first to The Estaque, then Gardanne (near Aix) in 1885. He painted numerous landscapes of Provence, and many paintings on Sainte-Victoire mountain. He died in Aix-en-Provence in 1906.
