The attack took place on March 4, 1960, in the port of Havana. The French freighter, La Courbe, which was carrying Belgian ammunition bound for the revolutionaries, exploded twice. There were hundreds of dead and wounded. The attack was attributed by the Cuban government to the United States, which then pressured European governments to establish an embargo on the arms trade with Cuba. The next day, a commemorative march took place, in the procession appeared in particular Fidel Castro and Che Guevara. A platform was improvised, from which Castro gave a speech denouncing the actions of the Americans. It was during this speech that the photographer, Alberto Korda, immortalized Che Guevara. Korda gave the genesis of this emblematic photo: "I was ten meters from the platform when I saw Che approaching the balustrade near which stood Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. Guevara was somewhat withdrawn. "I have my eye on the viewfinder of my Leica. Suddenly emerges from the bottom of the platform, in an empty space, the Che. He has a fierce expression. I immediately pressed the shutter, almost by reflex. The famous shot that he later titled "Guerrillero Heroico" is now one of the best known and marketed in the world.
