NAPOLEON I (Napoleon Bonaparte) (1769 - 1821), Emperor of France
Letter signed "Napoleon" to the Duke of Wurzburg. Paris, April 3rd, 1810; 1 folio page. Recipient's name on page four and a small collection stamp at the bottom of the same page. Note that the
letter
was deliberately torn at half of the height but later was perfectly restored. Also note that the signature of the emperor was crossed out at the bottom of the page, most certainly by Napoleon
himself
who perhaps wanted to change the text.
Napoleon announces in person his next wedding with the Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria, to the Grand Duke of Wurzburg, title granted by Napoleon in 1805 following the Treaty of Pressburg .:
"Dear
Brother and Uncle, The interest you have constantly shown for anything that can contribute to my satisfaction is too well known to me that I differ in announcing that the civil act of my
marriage
with Archduchess Marie-Louise of Austria was signed in St Cloud on the first of this month and that the religious ceremonies took place the next day in my Imperial Chapel of the Louvre. I do
not
doubt that you will take part in an event that will ensure the happiness of my Imperial House and the prosperity of my Empire. You must be persuaded that I will always take the greatest interest
in
anything that may please you, and I take this opportunity to give you new reassurance of my esteem and perfect friendship. "
On the 1st of April, 1810, the civil marriage was celebrated at the Palais de Saint-Cloud according to all the details regulated by M. de Segur, Grand Master of Ceremonies, in the presence of
