Embossed copper

Former French private collection

Appraised by the porter's office

Repoussé copper representation of a celestial guardian (lokapala) represented standing, feet apart wearing ankle boots. He is dressed in several clothes and a long coat with wide sleeves as well as a snow leopard skin cape covering his shoulders. An elaborate belt featuring a kitimurkha head buckle, sashes fluttering around the shoulders and down the body. The right hand holds a ritual cleaver (trigug), the left hand seizing a scabbard. The round face with thick eyebrows frames a flat nose overhanging a half-open mouth revealing fangs. The ears with distended lobes accommodate two large circular pendants, the hair raised in an elaborate high bun behind a richly gold-plated crown.

Protectors of the faithful and of the Buddhist doctrine, the Lokapalas appeared in the Tibetan world around the 13th and 14th centuries.
