Igbo
Second half of the twentieth century
Undeniably one of the most known Igbo masks, that of the spirit of a deceased young girl.
This mask idealises the feminine beauty and showcases the adornments attributed to Nkpu wedding ceremonies.
They are generally made for the Mwo community, the face is white, colour associated with death.
The Mwo community wields its influence on the Northern Ibos, in the name of the gardian ancestors spirits.
