António Saura : (1930-1998) was a spanish painter and author born on September 22, 1930 in Huesca (Spain) and who died on July, 1998 (aged 67) in Cuenca. First influenced by Surrealism, he got away from it to go towards abstract painting, and then towards a more physical style, as he explained in an article signed by Harry Bellet : « When I got away from Surrealism, I took one subject - the female body - as a matrix for pictural constructions in black and white. Little by littled, auther themes associated with it". He founded the group El Paso with Manolo Millares, Rafael Canogar, and Luis feito. Despite his weak health, he remained a subversive painter, and a great personality of the art world. He was promoted chevalier des arts et lettres in 1981, and he received the Grand Prix de la Ville de Paris in 1995. He illustrated books by Kafka or George Orwell, and made theatre decors for Carmen (opera), and for the theatre play Wozzeck. The Antonio Saura foundation was created in 2006 by the Antonio Saura estate, in Geneva.
