Henri de TOULOUSE-LAUTREC – Signed autograph letter

Autograph letter signed “Henri” to his mother Adèle Zoë Tapié de Céleyran. (Paris, summer 1889); 3 pages in-8°. Incomplete letter of its central part not preventing its understanding.
Nice family letter: "My dear mother, I tremble taking the pen (in order to write you this word of letter, as the pioupious say) to make you feel the repercussions of the bad mood where I am thanks to offal water which have not stopped for 3 days. Nothing to do but watch the rain fall. I had the family yesterday. Uncle Charles buys [des] crossbows and other toys intended to clutter up his hostel. Your projects seem to me based on vague data. You should not push a Coursan point [Coursan near Narbonne], if you believe the thing urgent, until towards the end of September, I doubt that the smalah is still there or at least is still in Palavas. I would like to find an Arcachonnaise combination, but there are a lot of buts. I end with a wet kiss to the bone. Your boy Henry. Addition at the top of the first page: “I reread my letter. She's not in too bad a mood. So much the better ".

Henri Marie Raymond de Toulouse-Lautrec-Monfa was born in Albi on November 24, 1864. He is the son of Count Alphonse de Toulouse-Lautrec and Adèle Tapié de Celeyran, both cousins. His parents separated shortly after his birth. He spent his childhood raised by his mother and two grandmothers, between Albi and his family castles in Céleyran and Bosc. Henri stayed for the first time in Arcachon in 1872, then aged 8, with his mother Adèle. In 1878, he broke his femur following a bad fall which revealed a fragility of the bones. He won't grow anymore. Lying down, he spent his time drawing under the encouragement of his uncle, Charles de Toulouse-Lautrec, younger brother of his father, and amateur artist, whose charcoal portrait Henri executed in 1882.
